Paracetamol


Also known as acetaminophen overseas...
 
Regular paracetamol can reduce the requirement of opioids (up to 30%) so should be charted for all post operative patients who do not have contra-indications
 
Action: Change prostaglandin levels in the brain
 
Usual Dose
 
1gm QID PO/PR/IV
 
Advantages
  • Cheap, safe
  • Good for:
    • Mild pain (by itself)
    • Acute, chronic, cancer, non-cancer, nociceptive pain
    • Mod-severe pain (with other drugs)
Disadvantages
  • Liver damage in overdose
  • Remember weight based dosing in some patients
  • May be hard to swallow for some patients
