Ako Aotearoa Learning Analytics Roadshow

The Learning Analytics Roadshow is generously supported by Ako Aotearoa through Ako National Project Fund Grant number NPF15-008.

What can we learn from learning analytics?

Learning analytics is defined as “the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimising learning and the environments in which it occurs."

(1st International Conference on Learning Analytics and Knowledge, LAK 2011)

A national series of free events!

Please join us for a national series of events to explore the potential of learning analytics in tertiary education which will be held from 11 to 19 October in several locations around NZ. Seminars will outline key issues and opportunities, workshops will offer hands on experience, and panel discussions will focus on the different priorities and perspectives of key players in the learning analytics space.

Registration is free. Seminar venues and dates are available below.

Why learning analytics?

Learning analytics practice has the potential to deepen teachers’ understanding of learning and provide real time insights into student progress. However, realising that potential is no simple task, as relevant data may not be accessible in readable format to provide teachers with actionable insights.

Learning analytics could be part of a powerful evidence base for teaching and learning design. However, experience suggests that research is pushing the boundaries of what technology can do rather than focusing on the questions teachers want to answer. Issues of access and ethical use of student data are still being debated at institutional level, so guidelines for acceptable use have yet to be established.

A national series of seminars, workshops and panel discussions will explore the issues and opportunities identifed by research into practice within New Zealand and internationally. The aim of these events is to promote wider engagement in discussions and develoment of learning analytics practice to move from potential to actual use.

Seminars will highlight the practical issues for teachers wanting to engage with learning analytics data. While bigger questions about access and ethical use of student data are discussed at institutional level, there is a lot that teachers can do with readily available data to track their students’ progress and understand their learning. Three optional workshops will offer hands on experience with:

  • A tool to track student engagement and trigger contact from teachers. Read more...
  • A framework to align different types of data with the rhythms of teaching. Read more...
  • A way to analyse student generated text, e.g. as discussion posts or short answers, to explore learner understanding of the content. Read more...

Panel discussion

Panel discussions will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and understanding of learning analytics concepts. The burning question is, are NZ’s tertiary institutions and teachers ready to engage? Read more...
